International Meeting 2007

This is the invitation and leaflet cover for the International Meeting on Ospreys – 2007, organized by the Maremma Regional Park, in Alberese, with many experts and foreign guests. A wonderful meeting taking the stock of the Osprey situation in the Mediterranean sea. On this occasion I designed the logo and the other graphics.

Osprey's nest in maremma park

Acquerello.
A montage with one of the most beautiful photographs of the Maremma Park, showing five Ospreys on a tree, the young and the adults, with the Castelmarino tower in the background in the Mediterranean wood. The drawing was made while watching the scene and it portrays one of the young Ospreys on the nest. Watercolour.

Matita.
Orbetello lagoon, November 2012. A day spent in Maremma between the Park and the Orbetello lagoon. There was an Osprey perching on poles and fishnets in the lagoon. It had come flying and then it was perching, waiting... I portrayed these two moments on my sketchbook. At least a couple of Ospreys stop in Orbetello during the winter, plus some of the young Ospreys or adults born in the Maremma Park, wandering in the area. Pencil.

This is the new logo I designed for the Maremma Regional Park, Grosseto, Tuscany. The Osprey has been included with the wild boar after the successful birth of two little Ospreys last year: the Maremma Park is the only place in Italy where the Ospreys have come back to nest and breed.

Tuffi spettacolari

Spectacular dives. Osprey's dives to catch the prey are spectacular, one of the most beautiful observations for those who follow and love this hawk. Here I wanted to represent the moment just before the impact on water, when the whole body is sleek and aerodynamic in order to catch the prey with precision. The claws stretched forward, the head aligned just above, the wings half closed, to gain power and speed. China and watercolour.

China drawings for the book publication: here we see some Osprey's biology, with the egg, the chicks, the young and the adult in flight, details of the head, foot, prey and different nests...

Scozia. Adulto posato, Loch of Lowes

Scozia. Tempera.
Scotland. In the area near Loch of Lowes, one of the lakes included in a protected reserve. Here there is a very beautiful Osprey nest, which can be seen from the observation huts. This adult was repeatedly calling, possibly his/her partner, in a perch close to the nest. A very charming place to visit if you love Ospreys. Guache.

Matite e acquarello.
Scotland, my favourite country. I love the forests, the lakes, the heaths, the cliffs and the bluffs on the sea. And most of all the rivers and lakes with pine forests where the Scottish Ospreys live. Thanks to Keith Brockie, a famous Scottish wildlife artist who paints nature like few other people in the world, I met and observed my first Ospreys in Scotland, in Perthshire. As a group of wildlife artists from Rome, we have been hosted by Keith for several years: in the highlands, on the Isle of May, in the Caledonian Pine Forest. And we have observed many Ospreys. My most cherished memories... Here, in the Scottish rain, in a pine forest... Pencils and watercolour.

Corsica - Scandola Riserva Naturale

Matite e acquerelli.
We are in Scandola, Galeria, in the Regional Park of Corsica, looking from a privileged observatory on a vertical face, a pinnacle in the sea just in front of the Osprey nests. These are the studies of two different nests: an artificial and a natural one. The chicks that later arrived at the Maremma Park for the reintroduction project, six every year, came from these couples and from these nests. Drawing conditions were difficult but the view and the observations made from this cave are unforgettable. Pencils and watercolour.

Acquerello.
We visited the Osprey nests and couples with our friend Hannu Hautala, an expert of Finnish birds of prey and a famous photographer known for his enchanting shots. We were in the surroundings of Kuusamo, where I was vacationing and was hosted by Fabrizio Carbone and Patrizia Chiozza, in their legendary “I due cieli” home, in Tolva. I went back there with Fabrizio and Hannu in different years and seasons to see a couple of Osprey nests near our usual area. This is one of the most beautiful studies. Fabrizio paints too and together we published a book, I diari di Tolva, about the Finnish nature with his illustrations and nature journal in the surroundings of Tolva. Watercolour.

Sketch to Rutland Water - England

Matita.
Our cooperation with the Rutland Water Reserve team, in England, brought us to visit the Osprey Centre and the nests on the lake where the Ospreys have been breeding now for years thanks to the work of the English and Scottish group with Roy, Tim & co. Our Italian delegation of the Maremma Park could observe the Osprey couples there and these are some pages of Rutland travel sketchbook. Pencil.

Here is the famous nest on the Ombrone river with the couple who gave birth to the little Maremma Ospreys: you can see the photograph taken by Flavio Monti exactly when I was sketching the same scene, next to the picture... Two different ways of representing and making art, the same aim: convey a conservation message. Watercolour on sketchbook.

The page of La Repubblica online, dedicated to the birth of the two Ospreys in Maremma, with the drawings of the nest and the Ombrone river couple by me and Iole Eulalia Rosa. The Ospreys making a comeback in Italy as breeding pairs after 42 years was sensational news in our country. Thanks to the Maremma Park project in cooperation with the Regional Park of Corsica.

Osprey sketches in Finland and England

Matita.
Two studies made during two really beautiful journeys, one in Rutland Water, in the wonderful English Reserve with experts Tim Mackrill and the Corsican-Italian group, and the other in Finland, in the Pohtoliampi Osprey centre, near Tampere, thanks to the dear friend Pertti Saurola and his work for the Finnish Ospreys. Pencil.

Osprey sketch in caccia

Matita e china.
This is another series of studies on the Osprey hunting behaviour... This is the dive sequence from when they spot a fish to when they catch it. I have seen many of these sequences and tried to portray the most similar and frequent which the Ospreys use for their spectacular dives. Pencil and china.

Matita.
These various studies were made from a sketchbook during several observations and days in nature following the Ospreys in Italy and abroad. Some of these studies have been published in the book A life of the Osprey, by the leading expert of the species, the Scottish ornithologist Roy Dennis, who hosted me in Scotland to observe the Ospreys; eventually I had the honour and joy to illustrate his precious book on the history of this bird of prey. Pencil.

Scene di caccia... Maremma

Maremma. Matita.
Maremma. An Osprey fishing scene, when they try and try again, diving and coming out of water often without prey... It is not so easy or expected that each dive is a hunting success. Both young Ospreys needing to learn, and adults, often cannot keep the fish in their claws or miscalculate by only few centimetres and miss the prey... However their dives are really spectacular. Pencil.

Maremma Ospreys

Here is a little editing included in the exhibition in Rome, portraying the Osprey nest – Osprey in the Maremma Park – which was prepared with Flavio Monti, who studies and follows the Osprey in the Maremma Park, and the artist Iole Eulalia Rosa. Here there are the three of us at work. In the middle, the famous Ombrone river nest that has brought new life to the Park...

So, after years of observations and drawings, studies etc. I arranged an exhibition on the Osprey which was hosted in several places and updated last year with new drawings that I made together with the wildlife artist Iole Eulalia Rosa on the Ombrone river nest and couple (Maremma Park) which brought to the first nest-building and birth of two little Ospreys after 42 years in Italy... A deep joy and many days passed under the nest hoping, waiting, drawing, suffering together with the couple until that 17 May 2011 when we saw two little newly born Osprey heads peeping out from the nest. A final confirmation.

In volo sul mare - Corsica

Corsica. Acquerello.
Corsica. From my privileged observatory on the vertical face, on the edge of the sea, I could see and observe, at the same height, the Ospreys acrobatic flights over the sea to the nest. This male is going back to his partner. Watercolour.

Corsica - Riserva Scandola

Acquerello.
Corsica, Corsican Regional Park, Scandola Reserve. A marine reserve with sheer cliffs and Osprey nests along the whole coast... The most important colony in the Mediterranean sea, almost 30 couples. I was in a cave, on a vertical face over the sea. With the help of my Corsican friends J.Marie Dominici and his staff I had been lowered down there to pass the whole day with the Ospreys, overhanging the sea. It is impossible to forget those days and that day in particular. Many studies, observations, and emotions, a unique experience with no one around, just me and the Ospreys, with nothing beneath me and the sea horizon... They came back to collect me in the evening, pulling me up with the ropes! Watercolour.

Matita.
A close-up of a female Osprey on nest in Finland, made from a study on sketchbook. I was with Hannu Hautala and Fabrizio Carbone in an area of lakes and forests near Kuusamo. An amazing nest on pine tree (Pinus sylvestris) near a lake. I went back there for several days to observe the couple and the female on the nest. Pencil.

Parco Maremma - pesca sull'Ombrone

Sketch a matita.
Finally in “my Park”, in Maremma, where the first Italian Osprey couple bred last year, thanks to the international project between the Natural Park of Maremma and the Regional Park of Corsica. Over the past years I was involved in the planning and cooperation with the Park and the experts working on the reintroduction project. This study illustrates one of the males released in June who was experiencing his first successful dives, fishing the Ombrone river, not far from the pinewood where the nests and the artificial perches were. Pencil sketches.

Studi dal vivo. Scozia, 2002

Sketch a matita.
Scotland, Inverness area, near the famous RSPB Loch Garten site. This Osprey female is keeping a watchful eye on the nest and waiting for the arrival of the male bringing food. A beautiful July day together with some illustrator friends. Pencil sketch.

Osprey in partenza...

Matita.
This is one of my favourite drawings, a pencil drawing from a sketchbook study during a trip in Scotland in the pinewoods... An Osprey spreading its wings from the top of a pine tree. Pencil.

"Progetto Osprey" book

Starting the blog with the cover of my book dedicated to the Ospreys and the Maremma project.
